Man Who Stalked Business Owner Made Past Threats At Bethany Luthean

MANKATO – Bail has been set at $50,000 for the Mankato man arrested after stalking a Mankato business owner.

19-year-old Mal Tharjiath of Mankato was arrested Monday after running away on foot when officers arrived at Electric Beach.

Court records say Tharjiath entered the business and the woman told him to leave.

The woman told officers Tharjiath told her that he "just wanted to apologize." Wnen told a second time to leave, she says he kept saying "Why? Why? Why?."

Told to leave a third time, Tharjiath became upset and said "I can't believe you don't know my name."

He then stood outside the glass door to the business staring inside.

Tharjiath ran when police arrived at the business. The responding officer started chasing him on foot, crossing Hilltop Ln. Another responding officer saw a "sweaty and out of breath" man matching the suspect's description walking on a foot trail near Kennedy Elementary.

After swearing at the officer, the man took off running again, eventually scaling a fence to get inside the track area at East High School. Climbing another fence, Tharjiath fell and was shot with a Taser and stunned three times before being detained.

The woman told police she had briefly met Tharjiath at a self-help meeting last October and felt sorry for him after he told his story to the group. She exchanged phone numbers, but later received an text message saying "money" and later a voice mail saying "Yeah, I am going to get you."

Bethany Incident
Mankato police responded to Bethany Lutheran College on March 18 after receiving a report that a man had been walking around the campus saying he had a gun and was going to shoot someone.

When officers arrived, campus security had Tharjiath in custody. Security said Tharjiath didn't have a gun, but was making hand guestures like he was shooting a gun and was causing a scene.

In the back of the squad car, while being transported to the Blue Earth County Justice Center, Tharjiath was making hand gestures that he was shooting the officer.

Officer say Tharjiath said "I'll shoot you (expletive)." "I'll shoot 20 of you (expletive) cops if I need to."

The officer said Tharjiath then said "Bang, bang, band" and then laughed.
