22 Former And Current MoonDogs Selected During MLB Draft



MANKATO -- 22 current and former members of the Mankato MoonDogs were drafted in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.

Seven MoonDogs players were selected in the first 20 rounds of the draft.

 

Former MoonDog Logan Odom (USC) was the first MoonDog selected in the 2011 MLB Draft, taken in the 8th round with the 255th pick by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Odom was a member of the MoonDogs in 2010 when he went 5-3 and posted a 2.35 ERA in 19 appearances. Odom also had 66 strikeouts in 69 innings of work on the mound for the ‘Dogs.

 

Xorge Carillo (Arizona St.) was selected in the 14th round with the 432nd pick by the New York Mets. Carillo was a MoonDog catcher in the 2009 season and hit .214 in 38 games with the team.

 

The MoonDogs had back-to-back picks in the draft, current catcher Jeremy Rodriguez was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 503rd pick in the 16th round and former MoonDog outfielder Trevor Adams (Creighton) was selected with the 504th pick by the Texas Rangers.

 

The action continued during day 2 of the draft for the MoonDogs. Eric Wooten (Central Arizona) was the first current MoonDog drafted. Wooten was taken in the 15th round with the 455th pick by the Baltimore Orioles. This past season for the Vaqueros, Wooten struck out 25 batters in 28 innings and allowed only five earned runs all year, posting a team best 1.60 ERA. Wooten paved the way for eight other current MoonDogs that were drafted during day two.

 

Current 2011 MoonDogs that were drafted are, Nick Goody who was taken in the 22nd round, 689th overall by the New York Yankees. Outfielder Zach Borenstein (Eastern Illinois) was picked 705th in the 23rd round by the Los Angeles Angels. Pitcher Jordan Remer (San Francisco) was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 23rd round with the 744th pick. Speedy shortstop Evan Frazar (Galveston) was selected with the 818th pick in the 27th round by the Cleveland Indians. Abel Guerrero (Galveston) who is Frazar’s college and MoonDog teammate, was also selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 1088th pick in the 36th round. Joe Loftus (Vanderbilt) and Max Rossiter (Central Arizona) were the last two current MoonDogs drafted in 2011. Loftus was selected with the 1384th pick in the 46th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Rossiter was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 46th round as well with the 1410th pick in the draft.

 

Former Mankato players that are currently playing the Major Leagues are Jack Hannahan (2001) who is starting at third base for the Cleveland Indians, Curtis Granderson (1999) who is starting in the outfield for the New York Yankees, and Brandon Crawford (2005) who was recently called up by the San Francisco Giants and hit a grand slam in his first career major league at bat.
