Local Lawmakers React To Budget Deal

ST. PAUL – Minnesota lawmakers worked through the night to pass a budget deal to stop the state government shutdown.

Governor Dayton’s signature is all that is needed to end the 20-day shutdown.

The agreement calls for $1.4 billion in new revenue. $700 million will come from shifting dollars from K-12 education. Mankato DFL State Representative Kathy Brynaert calls the deal the worst possible solution.

The other $700 million dollars in appropriation bonds are backed by future tobacco settlement money.

DFL State Rep. Terry Morrow of St. Peter says he doesn’t like the borrowing.

Morrow says the result is an irresponsible way to solve Minnesota’s budget deficit.

Governor Dayton will sign the bill at nine this morning.
