BREAKING NEWS -- Munt Found Guilty Of First Degree Premeditated Murder



MANKATO (TEC News) -- A jury today found Joel Marvin Munt guilty of premeditated Murder in the First Degree.

Munt was accused of the March 28, 2010 shooting of his ex-wife inside her car at Rasmussen Woods. The couple's three children were in the car with their mother at the time of the shooting.

The jury took only 3 hours and 33 minutes to reach a decision today. They left the courtroom at 12:26 p.m. after both sides finished closing arguments. Court officials say they notified bailiffs of a verdict at 3:59 p.m.

Munt was found guility of 17 counts including four counts of First Degree Murder -- premeditated, with intent while committing a felony, while committing domestic abuse and a second charge of intent while committing a felony.

They also found Munt guilty of 2nd Degree murder, two counts of 1st Degree Aggravated Robbery for stealing a vehicle at the scene of the shooting, Drive-By Shooting for using a vehicle in the murder, three counts of 2nd Degree Assault with a Dangerous Weapon for pointing a gun at three witnesses inside the park after the shooting; the kidnapping of his three children from their custodial mother after she was murdered.

Munt was also found guility of one felony and two gross misdemeanor counts of Criminal Vehicular Opertation -- Operate Motor Vehicle in a Grossly Negligent Manner.

After the hearing Svetlana Munt's mother, Liudmila Vudmyaya, spoke to the media through their intrepreter.

"We are content with the verdict....we are happy," said Vudmyaya. "Even though there was a lot said about Svetlana we didn't like."

"She was a very good lady, a very good mother, kind, loved her children and did everything she could for the children," said Vudmyaya.

The mental illness portion of the trial will begin at 8:30 Monday morning.

The same jury of seven men and five women will hear that case and render a verdict as well.

Judge Kurt Johnson told the jury he expects they will hear testimony and have the case all on Monday.

The prosecution and defense both declined to comment until after part two of the trial is completed.
