Marvin Carl Bindig was identified as the victim this morning by the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities say the vehicle driven by Bindig was traveling westbound on County Road 69, also known as "Stonecut Road" according to Capt. Rich Murry.

According to Murry, Bindig's 1993 Ford crossed over into the eastbound lane and struck a 1996 Oldsmobile driven-by Courtney Boeck, 20, of St. Peter. Another eastbound car driven-by Dennis Kleinow, 44, of rural Mankato then struck Boeck's vehicle.

Investigators at this point don't know why Bindig's car crossed into the wrong lane.

"The driver was quite elderly," said Murry. "We don't know if that was part of the cause of the accident or not."

Age and other health issue may have contributed to his death as well.

"When he left the scene we didn't feel he had life threatening injuries," according to Murry. "But he died later at the hospital."

Bindig was the only person involved in the crash that was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Mankato.

Murry says Bindig was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut out of his car. South Bend Fire Department arrived first on scene and worked on extricating Bindig from his car.

The crash happened around 8:12 p.m. Wednesday night.
