Sky Lanterns Danger

MANKATO-August 2, 2012-(KMKO)-The city of Mankato has received requests to use sky lanterns, or paper balloons that use a small flame to float.  The product, which is illegal in Minnesota, has been found to be harmful to animals and can potentially start a fire.  Mankato Department of Public Safety Deputy Director Jeff Bengtson says sky lanterns travel more than one mile before landing, and can start a fire without anyone knowing.  Sky lanterns are a tradition found in some Asian cultures.
