Tobacco Tax Moving Forward
ST. PAUL (TEC News) - A tax increase will be implemented on tobacco starting in July. The tax conference committee cleared the tobacco bill and its on its way to the House and Senate. Governor Dayton said he would be signing it once it hits his desk. The total tax will be $2.83 per pack. This increase is estimated to keep more than 47,700 Minnesota kids from becoming tobacco-addicted adults, help more than 36,600 current Minnesota smokers quit and save more than 25,500 Minnesotans from premature smoking-related deaths. $3 billion is spent annually in tobacco-related health care costs.
