Commissioners Discuss County Administrator Position

MANKATO – Blue Earth County Commissioners seem intent on finding a new county administrator from within their current crop of employees.
The board was briefed Tuesday by county human resource on their options during a work session.
Calling it “the most important position in the county”,Commissioner Vance Stuhrenberg said he would favor opening up the position to all internal applicants.
“I don’t want to push this through and rubber-stamp this.” Said Stuhrenberg.
At question is whether or not to simply offer the job to interim county administrator Bob Meyer.
“I think Bob is the right person for the job,” said Commissioner Kip Burender.
Also indicating support for hiring Meyer was Commissioner Mark Piepho.
At the same time, Commissioner Drew Campbell indicated he was leaning towards allowing other county employees to apply.
Not offering an opinion during the work session was Commissioner Will Purvis.
The position opened up at the end of the year upon the retirement of long time county administrator Dennis McCoy. Upon announcing he was leaving, he gave his endorsement to his assistant, Katie Nerem.
Nerem took over as interim administrator on January 1st, but had resigned for another position on January 18th.
Meyer took over for Nerem after 22 years in county government, including the last decade at Blue Earth County’s Human Services Director.
