ST. PAUL – For the second year in a row, New Ulm opened the state girls’ hockey tournament with a loss to Breck. 5th-ranked Breck beat the Eagles Wednesday morning 12-1. Alexa Wiess scored New Ulm’s only goal of the game with just 5.3 seconds to play.
New Ulm will face Hutchinson in the consolation semifinals this morning at 10 a.m. at Ridder Arena.
The New Ulm-Breck game was one for the state tournament record books. Breck set a record with 56 shots in the game.
They also tied their own records set in 2008 with seven goals in a period and 12 goals in a game.
The 13 goals by both teams set the mark for most goals by two teams in one game.
