Brynaert Would Vote No On Sunday Liquor

MANKATO – As a bill to allow Sunday liquor sales moves through the Minnesota Senate, Representative Kathy Brynaert (DFL-Mankato) says it’s not an issue her district has strongly pushed for.

“I think for the most part outstate Minnesota seems content with things as they are,” says Brynaert.

The legislation passed out of a Senate committee Tuesday on an 8-7 vote despite opposition from the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association and Minnesota Teamsters.

“I haven’t been a supporter up to now because I haven’t heard a strong voice on behalf of that.

Supporters say Sunday sales could add another $10 million dollars a year in new tax revenue. A Revenue department analysis says that figure is more like $500,000.

“I really don’t see the strong economic or convenience argument,” said Brynaert.

All four surrounding state allow Sunday liquor sales.

“You hear the discussion more around border towns that they might lose sales across the border,” says Brynaert.

“I don’t think its that big of a deal to plan and buy your wine for Sunday dinner on Saturday.”

A hearing on the bill in the House has yet to be scheduled.
