ST. PETER – Police in St. Peter are investigating four residential burglaries that have occurred in the last two weeks.

“Residential burglaries are fairly rare here,” says St. Peter Police Chief Matt Peters.

The burglaries have happened in homes in the Summit Community, the 700 block of Washington Avenue and the 600 block of Minnesota Avenue. The fourth burglary was a garage in the 400 block of Mulberry.

“In all but one case these have been situations where doors have been unlocked,” says Peters. “There was no forced entry. Someone simply walked in these residences.”

Detectives say all the burglaries have happened in the early morning hours, between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

“In one case someone was sleeping in the home,” says Peters.

While they have been dozens of burglaries reported across south central Minnesota, including western Nicollet County, they haven’t been a problem until now in St. Peter.

“We have been seeing thefts from vehicles as the weather warmed up,” according to Peters.

As for now, police say lock your doors and be aware of your surroundings.

“What we’re really asking people to do if they see someone that appears out of place in their neighborhood, especially if they are walking or in a vehicle, is to call police immediately,” says Peters.

He says don’t discount anything you see.

“We’d rather have people call than not,” says Peters. “We’ll figure out the circumstances and go from there.”
