Father allegedly responsible for fire that killed 22-year-old woman
PAYNESVILLE, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in central Minnesota have arrested a family member after a 22-year-old woman died in a mobile home fire.
Paynesville police were called to the fire just before 7 p.m. Tuesday. Police say a man was pouring gasoline inside the mobile home and started it on fire.
The home was engulfed in flames when officers arrived. The woman, identified as Jamey Newport of Paynesville, was found inside the bathroom. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at a Paynesville hospital.
The girl’s father, John Sean Newport, 46, was reportedly arrested in connection with her death and is being charged with 2nd-degree murder. After being treated at a hospital, he was taken to Stearns County Jail.
The suspect is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder and awaiting a court appearance.
An autopsy determined the woman died of smoke inhalation. Her death was ruled a homicide.
