MANKATO, MN  — Nearly three months after a soft closure and an emotional community meeting, the Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS) is turning a new page with fresh leadership at the helm.

Dede Barton has been appointed as the new Executive Director, bringing more than a decade of experience in animal welfare, including her previous role with the Waseca County Animal Humane Society.

“My focus is on the animals—their health, their care, and their quality of life,” Barton stated. “I want to leave any drama behind and move forward.”

The organization has weathered significant changes in leadership and board membership. However, with BENCHS now fully operational, Barton is optimistic about restoring the shelter to its former prominence.

“My vision is for BENCHS to once again be a regional leader,” she said. “I want us to be the gold standard, the shelter other rescues in the area look up to.”

In the midst of these transitions, the shelter’s contract with the cities of Mankato and North Mankato expired, prompting both municipalities to establish their own animal impound programs. These new programs have been in place for about a week.

Barton, however, sees an opportunity for collaboration. “I hope to meet with the city of Mankato to discuss potential partnerships,” she said. “I’d like BENCHS to be part of their city pound efforts.”

As the new year unfolds, the shelter is addressing lingering challenges. The upheaval last fall led to the loss of several volunteers and their full-time veterinarian, both of which Barton says are top priorities to rebuild.

Despite the hurdles, Barton is eager to guide BENCHS toward stability and renewed purpose in serving the region’s animals and community.
