(Sleepy Eye, MN) – Del Monte will close its Sleepy Eye plant, the company said Tuesday.

A release from Singapore-based Del Monte Pacific Limited says the Sleepy Eye plant is one of two in the U.S. to close its doors.

Tim Schramm, a spokesperson for Del Monte, says the plant will permanently close at the end of the pack season – roughly October 21st.  After that, layoffs will begin in stages and conclude when all closing activities are completed – around June 2020, according to Schramm.

There are approximately 69 full-time employees and 294 seasonal employees impacted by the closure.

A second plant in Mendota, Illinois will also close, while another in Cambria, Wisconsin will be sold as an operating facility after the packing season is completed.  A plant in Crystal City, Texas will transfer production to an outside location later in the year.

DMPL’s intention is to lighten its assets, particularly of its U.S. subsidiary Del Monte Foods, according to the release.
