This Little Guinea Pig Is NOT For Sale

New York’s City Council just banned the sale of guinea pigs in the Big Apple because of the huge number of critters who’ve been abandoned or surrendered to shelters. The cuddly cuties became very popular during the pandemic, but then people realized they’re very high maintenance, requiring special diets and bedding. More than 750 were turned into shelters last year, and Allie Taylor, president of the nonprofit Voters for Animal Rights, says, “We’re still getting calls all the time from people who are finding guinea pigs abandoned in city parks.” While pet stores are banned from selling the rodents, they can still be adopted through non-profits.
