(Mankato, MN) – No presidential election hype for 2019’s Election Day, but there were still a few notable results locally.

In Blue Earth, a referendum to increase property taxes failed by just 36 votes.  The measure would have generated about $900,000 in annual revenue for the school district.

In St. Peter, Mayor Chuck Zieman was re-elected by just 23 votes over his opponent Shawn Schloesser.

In the races for the St. Peter City Council:

Keri Johnson was elected for the Council Ward 1 seat over Harry Younvorst;

The Special Council Ward 1 seat goes to Shannon Nowell, who edged out Dustin Sharstrom;

Emily Bruflat and Bradley DeVos will represent Ward 2 after beating Terry Begemann and David McGuire.

Former St. Peter councilman and current Minnesota State Representative Jeff Brand said on Facebook that the election results mean that three women will serve on the council for the first time in local history.

Further southwest in Nobles County, Worthington residents approved three referendum measures that will allow the school district to sell nearly $34 million in bonds to pay for construction of a new school for 900 third, fourth, and fifth-grade students.  The referendum failed six times previously, garnering attention in national publications.
